Consent is Patriotic (UPDATED)

how about rolling over, as well?

Senate Democrats reached an agreement with Republican moderates on Friday to pare a huge economic recovery measure, clearing the way for approval of a package that President Obama said was urgently needed in light of mounting job losses.

The deal, announced on the Senate floor, was a result of two days of tense negotiations and political theater. Mr. Obama dispatched his chief of staff to Capitol Hill to help conclude the talks and reassure senators in his own party, and he called three key Republicans to applaud them for their patriotism.

Emphasis, ours.

So, by inference, those Republican and blue dog Democrats that haven’t played ball are… unpatriotic?

If not wanting to saddle future generations with a plan that will drown them in a tsunami of debt and will misallocate resources so as to only prolong the recession and which is merely a make-work program that is part political pay-off and an investment in the future (for more votes)… if opposing that is unpatriotic, then consider us the most treasonous, vile, and treacherous of sorts. We'll wear it proudly.

$1,000,000,000,000,000….. B.H.OOO,OOO,OOO,OOO,OOO!!!

P.S. By the way, the 3 patriotic Senators…? Wait for it…. Olympia Snowe, Susan Collins and Arlen Specter. No freakin’ way, right?

(UPDATE #1):
The short answer: to appease the centrists, a plan that was already too small and too focused on ineffective tax cuts has been made significantly smaller, and even more focused on tax cuts.

That from the NYT's government-for-government's sake savant, Paul Krugman who argues that the original $825 Billion plan should have been bigger by at least 50%. Amazing.

Well, why stop there? If $825 Bil won't do the trick and we need at least a 1.2-1.3 T plan to make it barely functional, then it stands to reason, by Krugman's logic, what we really need to get this baby ripping and to make all our problems take flight and disappear forever is a 2, 3, 4 Trillion dollar plan. Yaaaaaaay!

I do not understand why people are having diffculty understanding. The number of unemployed people (11.6 million) and the unemployment rate (7.6 percent) rose in January. Over the past 12 months, the number of unemployed persons has increased by 4.1 million. The Department of Labor reported today that nonfarm payroll employment fell sharply in January (-598,000) and the unemployment rate rose from 7.2 to 7.6 percent. Payroll employment has declined by 3.6 million since the start of the recession in December 2007, .... most of this mess happening only in past three months! And some wonder Obama is pushing so hard for a stimulus package. Is the Herbert Hoover approach, do nothing, all we need, leading us to a twelve year depression ??

Suggestions, we've tried this one before. So has Japan. It doesn't work. This is a balance sheet recession - that is, we have too much debt and we need to pay it off before we can grow again. Getting much farther into debt will only delay the day when our debt burden is low enough to spend and grow again.

S4O, thanks for stopping by.

What KT said... and the stimulus package is fatally flawed in that the vast majority of the spending will take place after most economists (including Obama's advisors) believe the recession will be over.

When one looks at when the money will be spent and what it will be spent on, one cannot help but think that actually creating jobs and lifting the economy out of this recession is secondary to a radical expansion of the federal government and an advancement of a long-sought series of agendas by the Democratic Party.
