America's Vacation!

... and the quote of the day:

In January, President Obama insisted that "everybody in the country is going to have to sacrifice something, accept change for the greater good. Everybody is going to have to give. Everybody is going to have to have some skin in the game."

Sometime back in the early 80s, we recall a particular cartoon from the formerly witty, insightful and uproariously funny strip Doonesbury. In it, a reporter was chiding President Reagan's press secretary regarding all the vacations the President seemed to take and what sort of message it was sending taking them during a recession. The press secretary responded in effect: "Hey, the way we look at it is the President's vacations are America's vacations. Every one's invited along!".

With that spirit in mind, book a flight over to Left Coast Rebel where CG has some commentary and some dazzling pictures of this year's America's vacation in Costa del Sol in the south of Spain.

Exit question: Anyone else here think it odd that the President celebrated his 49th birthday without his family? Like this trip to Spain could not have waited a few days?

Exit question #2: Still trying to figure out whether this administration is completely tone deaf or if they just don't give a rat's ass.

Your daily World Cup update

It's enraged you. It's charmed you. And perhaps by now, it's monotonous white noise quality has hypnotized you to a state of catatonic indifference. Of course, we're talking about the vuvuzela.

Forget the Rolling Stone, the new "arrival" mechanism for world-wide or American zeitgeist is now... Hitler and (subject of zeitgeist)

Deadspin does their part here with a roundup of "Annoying Use of the Vuvuzela Throughout History"

After Netherlands 3-2 dispatching of Uruguay yesterday, the 2nd semi-final takes place today between Spain and Germany. Enjoy pronouncing Sebastian Schweinsteiger in your best over-the-top German accent.

Townhall unrest...

Spanish-style

Youths in the Spanish town of Pinto have pelted their town hall with eggs and tomatoes in protest against budget cuts that have forced summer fiesta organisers to limit the number of bullfights, or scrap them.

Bullfighting is often the highlight of local celebrations, which also include music concerts and fireworks, and August and September are the months in which Spaniards flock to the country’s bullrings in greatest numbers.

The town hall, however, justified the measure on financial grounds. Juan José Martín, the socialist mayor, declared to El País newspaper that it had been a “difficult and painful decision”. The budget for the fiestas has been slashed from €500,000 ($711,200, £430,400) to €142,000 and the town owes 800 of its municipal staff back pay.

Damn Socialist kill-joys

We might say that this lends some perspective to what is going on over here but we think it might be more accurate to say this lends a different perspective to what we are seeing over here.
