He also participated in a virtual townhall phonecon with Susan Davis (D-San Diego). After reading his recounting of the event, we were wondering how it is that it is only waterboarding that is illegal.






KT loves the President's new idea (which really isn't all that new if you follow the comments at the link) of capping student loan payments at 10% of your income and thinks that if we apply that to other sectors of the economy we can really get the economy roaring.

The SLOBs as the name suggests are San Diego area residents who are committed to free and open markets and limited, transparent and Constitutionally-bound governance. A delightful mish-mash of conservative-libertarian poltics can be found at any one of the SLOB sites.


Automatic Blogroll will move the most recent blog posts to the top and easy-to-use "share" functions will allow you to help us get out the word on any number of social media platforms.

We had an opportunity to catch up with Ryan of Dueling Barstools yesterday at Stout Public House downtown where any alleged vetting process apparently consisted of a couple pints of Racer 5 and a shot of Jagermeister.

Ryan thought that SLOBs was a rather harsh moniker but we assured him that we were probably going easy on ourselves.

We had a near quorum, as W.C. showed up a little later.

"I would be a loser because I know myself and I know that as a teenager, I would have done anything to get out of work, to take extra money, to get on the government dole".

That pretty much describes the typical teenager, now doesn't it? - but Shane of Shane Atwell's blog takes on a thorny issue with respect to the Americans with Disabilities Act here.

Highlights:

Government claims there are 50 million people in the U.S. with a disability (1 in 6.5?) which is "disingenuous to people with real disabilities".

Coersion: "There is no room for (true) compassion - it's all mandated."

Private property/property rights: making voluntary concessions for the handicapped such as handicap parking spots is just good for business. Why does it need to be accomplished via private concerns staring down the barrel of a regulatory gun?

Got crazy?: How about drive-up ATM instructions in braille?

The ADA is an actual impediment to hiring those with disabilities. After all, who wants to hire a "rolling lawsuit"?

"Coersion never produces compassion"

That last point is fascinating as we have always been intrigued by the disincentivizing effects on personal desire and motivation that government action(s) have whether via the welfare state, social services or, in the case of the ADA, the regulatory regime.

It just seems to us completely natural and in keeping with human nature that any tendency towards sacrifice, compassion and civic good works is blunted by government intervention into areas of society that had been the previous domain of the individual, the family and a voluntary social safety net of churches and charitable organizations.




How bass-ackwards is it these days? High schools are now making community work a condition for graduation. That's right: Mandatory volunteerism.

Over the past 2 or 3 years, we've gladly penned letters to high schools on behalf of soon-to-be graduating seniors who had actual after-school jobs, stating they had performed work for our community council that they had never done thus giving them cover and relieving them of this completely ridiculous requirement. We felt that this very act of community service was the least we could do.

SLOB Update

The SLOBs (San Diego Local Order of Bloggers) got together this past Sunday evening to convene our regular (quarterly-ish) beer summit this time at the Yard House in downtown San Diego.

Leslie of Temple of Mut took an open primary straw poll of the summit's attendees to see who was their front-runner for the Presidency in '12 and Indiana governor, Mitch Daniels, took 3 of the 12 votes cast for the win... this time around.

"My question is a basic science question," I started. "In science, Falsifiability is key to any theory. So, is Climate Change Falsifiable?" The young man asked for more detail to be sure that I was not just reading some script. "For example, if I had a theory that all cars are green and then observed a red car it would prove my theory false." The call screener proclaimed his approval of the question and I shortly layed the question out to the two global warming advocates.

P.S. The imagery of Don Draper from "Mad Men" perhaps needs an explanation. In the run-up to the midterms, the House minority leader John Boehner, became the target of attacks from the Democrats, obviously, but also an anonymous Republican who called Boehner "a lazy bar hopper". Lumping this together with the fact that Boehner smokes and (in another pre-midterm smear) is an alleged womanizer to go along with his rakish good-looks, it hit us like a bolt of lightning - this idea that Leslie was working on at the very same time...














We implored America to embrace its dark side and indeed it did. And we were just grateful to play a small part in fabricating a new American folk hero and role model for aspiring pols everywhere.

Warning: This is what happens when you get S.L.O.B.s together

We want to say a few more words about the SLOB (San Diego Local Order of Bloggers) quarterly Beer Summit/Confab that we did not get around to in the previous post but first and in a totally related subject...

... we were driving home from work last week and listening to the radio when we heard that House minority leader, John Boehner was taking some grief from Bob Schieffer for Boehner's smoking habit during his appearance on Face the Nation. And it was just a week or two before where we heard some fellow Republican refer to Boehner as "a lazy barhopper". Sheesh. Unfortunately, the context did not allow for whether or not this person thought that Boehner was not applying himself in an sufficient manner while making his appointed rounds. Would've been good to know.

But all this got our mental wheels grinding away and when we got back to BwD headquarters we fired off an email to our friend, Leslie of Temple of Mut. Knowing what a big fan of Mad Men Leslie is, we explained what was rattling around in our head and requested her photoshopping skills in melding the image of John Boehner onto that of the hard-living but brilliant Don Draper. Leslie replied, "Great minds think alike - already working on it." The group-think that exists amongst the SLOBs is truly breath-taking.

At the Beer Summit, Leslie hinted that the grand unveiling was nigh and we must say we are blown away by the results.

One other order of business that was accomplished was the development of the Mad Men passion index for rating our election picks. Temple of Mut has all the details, here, because if we're going to allegedly rip the G.O.P. assunder let's do it with a Camel in one hand and a Scotch in the other. Seriously, check it out - we think you will enjoy.

But before we go, we must recognize! Tim of Left Coast Rebel and fellow SLOB, in addition to being picked up by The Daily Caller from time to time, now has a regular paying gig at Pajama's Media. We're damn proud of Tim as he is one of our own and we wish him great success in his burgeoning career as a citizen-activist-journalist. Congratulations, Tim!

Radio KBwD is on the air (Special Edition)

When we went with Elton John as a our featured artist for our weekly Radio KBwD installment back on Friday, it was due in large part to the fact that he had pulled off a trifecta this summer. In addition to playing at Rush's wedding, he cheezed off the international Left by refusing to participate in an Israel boycott by performing in Tel Aviv and just last week at a concert in Arizona, he essentially told musicians and artists who were boycotting Arizona to pound sand.

We won't pretend to know what John's politics are and frankly we don't care because the man is doing an awful lot right by angering the right people.

With that in mind, we thought a little bit about it over the weekend and decided we should have some fun with this.

Beers with Demo is declaring this coming week as Sir Elton John Week for all he's done in flipping the bird to the left and, of course, making great music.

With that in mind, over the next week, we'll be posting videos of our favorite Elton John songs. If you have a blog, please join in the fun and post some of your own. If you are a reader/commenter, chime in with suggestions.

And with specific concern to the most recent flare-up over race relations, she is exactly right. The ruling class wants us to take our eyes off the ball and we can't afford that to happen as W.C. Varones confirmed with his post.

"Tainting the tea party movement with the charge of racism is proving to be an effective strategy for Democrats. There is no evidence that tea party adherents are any more racist than other Republicans, and indeed many other Americans. But getting them to spend their time purging their ranks and having candidates distance themselves should help Democrats win in November. Having one’s opponent rebut charges of racism is far better than discussing joblessness."

Aside from the egregiousness of conspiring to smear and push an agenda at straight news sources, the take-away from the Journolist email disclosures is what a bunch of insufferable jerks these people are.


And speaking of Journolist lefties, Harrison over at his newly minted Capitol Commentary blows the lid off of the Journolist membership. You guessed it.... no Aleutians.


B-Daddy has an excellent post on the cynicism of using a toddler's death here in San Diego as an excuse to push a sales tax increase. Related at post: coming up with the finances for a new library and a shiny new city hall. City hall employees can work out of Quonset huts at Morley Field for all we care.

But it's all about civic pride, you say. Civic pride is an efficiently operated municipal government that does not try to guilt its constituents into a tax-hike. That and great breweries and a winning football team. We're two-thirds of the way there, now. Let's make this happen!

CBSSports.com has their Top 25 blog poll out. Results here.

Both Missouri and LSU fell hard after their losses on Saturday to OK St. and Florida, respectively and USC moves up only one spot to #9 after their sloppy win against Arizona St. (it would seem bloggers are as similarly unimpressed with SC as we are given they are #6 in the AP poll). But Utah and BYU both fall several spots after victories this weekend. A little MWC disrespect, here? We would bring up there stellar record against the Pac-10 this year but, sheesh, its only the Pac-10.
