Its a German Thing... You Americans Wouldn't Understand

This is what happens when foreign papers try to provide commentary and insight for their readers on delicate subjects in the American socio-political realm. The punch-line to the joke, which the teller thinks is cheeky, provocative, and clever comes across to Americans as clunky, ham-fisted, offensive and, worst of all, not funny.

Left-leaning German newspaper, Die Tageszeitung served up this beauty on the cover of their rag. The editors claimed their intent was to be thought-provoking and pretty much told everyone to pound sand if they didn't get it. OK? So what thoughts have they provoked? Ummmm…. that perhaps they think Obama is a step’n’fetchit go-fer for the Man? It may come as a disappointment to this paper but we believe Obama’s lock-step adherence to liberal-Left policies has nothing to do with his skin color.

It's as if the extent of “thought” the editors of “Taz” put into this cover was… “hmmm… let’s see… Obama is black and…. “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” is a very well-known book here in Germany about American slavery and oppression….. Got it…! “Uncle Barack’s Cabin”... Done! Hooray for us, we’re clever, we’re thought-provoking. Lunch anyone?”

UPDATE #1: Yowza! It seems Euro-bashing is the order of the day around the Theocracy. Along with latent paternal racism, eroding free speech, an inability to assimilate Islamic immigrants and a looming pensioner crisis add child pornography to the list of reasons to visit Europe this summer. And as long as were piling-on, it appears we have discovered the reason for oddly cozy relationship between France and Germany all these years: a shortage of cash + French women + Nazi occupiers + a sky-rocketing birthrate in 1942... you do the math.

Good gracious....

Honestly, I find it funny, but only in the "holy CRUD, does that say-- yes, it does. I can't believe they said that...."
