We’ve no earthly idea what is going on here but its MEMRI so we’ll assume its perfectly legit so let's just uhhh, roll tape:
Following are excerpts from an interview with members of the Egyptian Unique Moustache Association, which aired on Egyptian TV on July 11, 2008.
Interviewer: "I'm sure many people have pressured you to shave off your moustache, saying, 'What is this? Enough of that.'"
Association head Fathi Ahmad Mahmoud "Moustache": "My personality forces people to treat me with respect."
Interviewer: "Didn't your friends, relatives, your wife, or your children say 'Enough is enough?'"
Fathi Ahmad Mahmoud "Moustache": "They are all proud of me. My youngest boy, Nader, calls himself 'Nader Moustache.' Get it? All his friends call him 'Nader Moustache.'"
[...]
Interviewer: "Do you respect all types of moustaches - regardless of their size, length, or width?"
Allam Muhammad Abdel Al-Halim: "Of course."
Interviewer: "Even Hitler's moustache?"
Captain Sayyed Shahada: "By the way, I respect the moustache of this Hitler, because he humiliated the most despicable sect in the world. He subdued the people who subdued the whole world - him with his '11' moustache. By the way, that kind of moustache is called '11.' The generation of this Hitler... When I was little, my father, may he rest in peace, grew that kind of moustache, and so did all his classmates. They all had this '11' moustache. That was in the days of Hitler...
Fathi Ahmad Mahmoud "Moustache": "We have different styles. One style is 'the Douglas.' Then there's 'the Pretzel,' which is rolled like this... The 'Two Swords' style stands up like that... The 'Mafroud' is flat like a ruler. Another style is the 'Carter,' which comes out from here and is very wide."
Interviewer: "What is it called?"
Fathi Ahmad Mahmoud "Moustache": "The 'Carter.' We have two special hair designers, Muhammad Salomon and Yasser Imam. They are the association's designers. They designed all these styles." [...]
Video of this auspicious and enlightening occasion can be found here.
And what of Hitler's mustache and this "11" business? Ah, wait a minute. It seems the #11 holds strange and mystical powers over those who come under its spell.
We will be standing by for reaction from the American Mustache Institute who has been crusading for a Super Bowl Saturday vs. a Super Sunday, an idea of which we whole-heartedly concur. We can't imagine the lads will be treating the EUMA with a soft touch.

A Homecoming of sorts
“We may be white, but we ain’t tight”… so sounded the opening of the service’s praise music session by Pastor Stan Peterson of the Guatay Christian Fellowship who returned on Sunday to the building that houses their congregation after a nine-week absence and in defiance of a County order for them to cease-and-desist worship services there as the building was zoned for selling liquor but not for worship.
We attended services at GCF on Sunday to show our support for the congregation among flip-flops, sundresses, cowboy boots, board shorts and bolo ties and to find out the latest developments regarding the situation which we covered last week, here.
We hesitated in asking too many questions as it was apparent that the congregation was just happy to return to their “home”, though, Pastor Stan made reference to the situation several times throughout the rambling, free-form, interactive 1-1/2 hr. church service. Stan is a gregarious human being who, much to the eye-rolling and out-right laughing delight of his flock, is also the master of the malaprop and matter-of-fact speech.
“Don’t be mad at the county”, he urged, “they ain’t stupid, they just do stupid stuff, sometimes…”.
The grace, good-humor and charitable spirit exhibited by the whole of the GCF towards their situation is more than we imagine we could muster were we in the same situation.
From some of the conversations we did have and from Pastor Stan’s sermon, we gathered that free legal help was being offered from literally, around the country and as a result of this and the bad press they have received, the County appeared to be in full backpedal mode. Congressman Duncan Hunter was originally going to attend services but decided not to as he believed the press he would attract would be a distraction.
Though the order remains in effect, there is a site inspection scheduled for Tuesday to take a look at standard structural items, such as, fire detection, entrances/exits, signage, parking, etc. Perhaps, the County is looking to gracefully ease their way out of this mess they have created for themselves. Then again, who knows:
Tom Bunton, senior deputy county counsel, said it is still illegal for the church to use the building, but county officials yesterday had not decided what action they would take.
We swear it - this really shouldn't be that difficult, fellas.
We want to thank the GFC and Pastor Stan for their hospitality and friendliness. We had a great time.
Their musical selections reminded us of a quote from Robbie Robertson of the Band who said, “The South, was the only region we would play where the audience would clap on the back-beat”. With that we leave you with one of our favorite songs from one of our favorite bands… Here’s Creedance Clearwater Revival’s studio version of their country-gospel number, “Don’t Look Now”

You’re much-anticipated Accountable America Update.
In the comment section of "When one completely childish, reactionary and amateurish challenge deserves another.", B-Daddy threw down the gauntlet to see who could get their comments posted at Accountable America. They have a moderator so cleverness and bad grammar will be at a premium.
We checked in over there and in the 4 posts they have since starting-up, they have a grand total of one comment. Hey Tom Mattzie, we know how it feels…. Then again, we didn’t get any ink from the Old Gray Lady, either.
What? What’s that you say….? We’re in? Comment posted August 11 @ 8:13 P.M. B-Daddy, you so owe us dinner. Out.
(UPDATE #1): It seems our comment was delted around 1930 PDT. We're shocked and dismayed. It was full of good will, heartfelt thanks and 100% approval of their M.O. Since we compose in Word and then cut'n'paste, our post to Accountable America was as follows:
"Hey guys - thanks for doing this. I've been screaming for years for something like this. It killed me to see a true hero and patriot like John Kerry get dragged through the mud of these repugnicant retards. After all, he was doing what they hate the most: speaking truth to the power. Its time we took off the gloves. The future of this country is far too important to "play fair" or not confront in the most aggressive of manner these treacherous traitors.... even if it means we have to get our hands dirty a little, I'm willing, for the good of the country to go the Stalinist intimidation route. Eff'm, right? They've been doing it to us for years so I figure one good turn deserves another. Let's take America back and return it to the standards of decency that every man, woman and child in this and future generations can respect!
Keep up the good work and keep rockin'."
Evidently, we have failed to rock.

SCOREBOARD!

It may not have had that element of Cold War-era intrigue but we’re totally fine with some smack-talking from Frenchie for our Olympic red meat.
With history about to slip away and Michael Phelps cheering him on, Jason Lezak pulled up next to the lane rope and set out after hulking Alain Bernard, like a NASCAR driver drafting down the backstretch at Daytona. Only 25 meters to go, half the length of the pool. Every stroke brought Lezak a little closer, a little closer, a little closer, his body seemingly carried along by the Frenchman's massive wake. The two lunged for the wall together. When the result flashed on the board, Phelps was still on course for his record eight gold medals.
The French star was extremely confident about his team's chances heading into the big showdown. "The Americans? We're going to smash them," Bernard said. "That's what we came here for."
This stunning, thrilling and amazing upset victory by the men’s 4x100 freestyle relay team kept alive Michael Phelps’ quest for 8 gold medals. 2 down, 6 to go.
Lezak blazed the fastest 100 meter relay split ever, going 46.06 seconds and the American team, in the process, crushed their own world record, which they set in the prelims by 4 seconds. In all, 5 teams broke the world record… France, Australia, Italy and Sweden, which of course, meant that the Italians and Swedes break the world record but go home empty-handed.
By far, the most exciting swim race we’ve ever seen.

UPDATE #1: 'Dawg passed this along from the road. Mark Spitz, who won 7 golds at the '72 Munich games, was not invited to the Games by the IOC or the USOC to witness the potentiality of Phelps breaking his gold count. Snubbed or bitter? You make the call.

When one completely childish, reactionary and amateurish challenge deserves another.
Believe it. Nothing would have us whip out our check book and fire some cashe McCain’s way quicker than this.
Nearly 10,000 of the biggest donors to Republican candidates and causes across the country will probably receive a foreboding “warning” letter in the mail next week.
The warning letter is intended as a first step, alerting donors who might be considering giving to right-wing groups to a variety of potential dangers, including legal trouble, public exposure and watchdog groups digging through their lives.
This is funny. It really is. We welcome, though, more of this lefty piss-antism and we sincerely regret we lack the appropriate amount of scratch to crack the “Book of 10,000” where, if we were lucky enough to receive this letter, we would issue a public challenge to Matzzie to meet us out by the bike racks after school for his well-deserved ass-kicking.
Iowahawk has tracked down the letter that Accountable America will be issuing shortly.

About Last Night
Pretty spectacular Opening Ceremony last night. The best ever? Probably. In fact, the awesome spectacle provided by the Chicoms and the literally, cast of (ten)thousands reminded us of the poster below from the motivational wizards at Despair.com
It was great to see Jim Lampley back in the booth for NBC. Some questionable personal behavior and wacko political views aside, he has always been, in our mind, one of the top commentators in the business and his fill-in work on Rome’s radio show has always been top-notch. One of our earliest memories of Lamps was him getting tossled-about by jubilant fans outside a bar in Lake Placid in the wake of the mens’ hockey team’s “Miracle on Ice” in the ’80 Olympics. Good stuff.
Matt Lauer on China’s massive and concerted push to win medals at these games which he likened to the programs of the Cold War-era Eastern Bloc nations… “but just the good parts.” And those would’ve been…?
And nice to see Lauer isn’t going with any ridiculous looking hair piece or weave for his obviously thinning hair. Hey Matt, just be done with it both figuratively and literally and order-up a “No. 1” next time you're at the barber... err, stylist. Works for us. And keep rockin’.
China’s program to collect all those medals is something called “Project 119” which as far as we can tell is a push to medal in sports no one cares about.
We’re locked-in for this evening which will be heavy on the swimming and which because of the time change, we aren’t quite sure that what we’ll be watching is live, tape delay from yesterday, earlier today….. The Nagano Winter Games in ’98 were dead to us because of this… hope our personal time change maladjustment doesn’t do the same to these Games.

Queasy yet oddly appealing (UPDATED)... and (UPDATED again)
Originally, we weren’t going to comment on the John Edwards affair affair as the players surrounding the whole sordid episode have become as big as the story themselves but there were a couple of things that did jump out at us as we were making the internet rounds… First, from Ann Althouse:
"Imagine if he'd gotten the nomination. What a selfish bastard — to run for the nomination while parading his cancerous wife about and knowing that if he won this story could have come out at any time — maybe in October — screwing up his party's chances!"
Well, the outrage isn’t just limited to just Edwards but extends to Edwards’ wife, Elizabeth who apparently knew about the affair back in ’06 when Edwards came clean to her. This, from Lee Stranahan, a former Edwards supporter writing over at HuffPo:
"...if you're an Edwards supporter, let me put this bluntly; if you gave John and Elizabeth Edwards time, money, support, or goodwill, they played you.
They made a conscious decision to make their relationship a focus throughout the campaign. That emotional goodwill you feel for them? They not only let you feel, they took actions and made statements specifically so you would feel it.
Then when the rumors first surfaced, they made the worst decision of all; they decided to lie about it and to keep lying about it for months. They lied in a way that made the people who were telling the truth look like the real liars. They lied in a way that turned their supporters into attack dogs. They only started to tell the truth when John Edwards was caught at the Beverly Hills Hilton and even now both John and Elizabeth Edward are calling the people who caught him the liars. That's the definition of shameless."
And with the perceived lack of effort the main stream media has pursued this story, originally, there is the obligatory “What if he were a Republican?” Well, we know that answer, don’t we? Republicans don’t even have to have an affair for one to be insinuated. See: New York Times and John McCain.
UPDATE #1:Because we’re laughing our rear off at KT’s comment which was in reference to some digging that B-Daddy did, we’re liberating the subject email from L.A. Times editor Tony Pierce to the paper's bloggers putting the kibosh on any mention of Edwards’ affair. From the Kausfiles:
From: "Pierce, Tony"
Date: July 24, 2008 10:54:41 AM PDT
To: [XXX]
Subject: john edwards
Hey bloggers,
There has been a little buzz surrounding John Edwards and his alleged affair. Because the only source has been the National Enquirer we have decided not to cover the rumors or salacious speculations. So I am asking you all not to blog about this topic until further notified.
If you have any questions or are ever in need of story ideas that would best fit your blog, please don't hesitate to ask
Keep rockin,
Tony
Keep rockin’….?
Tony Pierce is that guy.
(UPDATE #2): To follow-up on B-Daddy's contention that the MSM blew-it, here's the NYT's ombudsman, Clark Hoyt with a, "umm... we wuz worked"...
"I would not have published the allegation of a McCain affair, because The Times did not convincingly establish its truth. I would not have recycled the National Enquirer story, either. But I think it was a mistake for Times editors to turn up their noses and not pursue it. “There was a tendency, fair or not, to dismiss what you read in the National Enquirer,” Keller said. “I know they are sometimes right.” When the Enquirer published its first “love child” report, The Times was going energetically after the McCain story. It should have pursued the other story as well."

Sewing-up the row house vote
Campaigning in Indiana, M.T. Suit was asked by a 7-year old why he wants to be the President. Suit’s response: “America is …, uh, is no longer, uh … what it could be, what it once was. And I say to myself, I don’t want that future for my children.”
Never mind for a moment the awesomeness of the burden he assumes for his children and by extension the rest of us unwashed, what is truly bizarre about that statement is that it is coming from a liberal African-American and one who is steeped in the paradigm that scoffs at this very notion when conservatives yearn for the “good ol’ days” when men were men, women were objectified and minorities knew (and were kept in) their place…. You know, the America that Archie Bunker sung about.
So, from the liberal perspective, when was it, exactly, in this nation’s history that he thought was better than it is now? We’re dying to know.

Catchin' up with Ezra

A happy (?) ending to yet another example of bureaucratic thuggery was achieved yesterday as the Alberta Human Rights Commission dismissed the complaint of discrimination filed against Ezra Levant by the Edmonton Council of Muslim Communities for reprinting the Danish cartoons of Mohammed some 2-1/2 years ago.
Whew…. There was a lot of time spent by some very diligent civil servants in determining whether or not Levant had actually committed any crimes and Levant himself shelled-out some coin to defend himself against this and other lawsuits against him that are still in progress…. so you would think Levant would be pretty happy, no?
Not quite.
Pardeep Gundara – a second-rate bureaucrat, a nobody – had to give me his approval for me to be allowed to go back to my business. For 900 days I was in the dock, waiting for this literary giant to pronounce his judgment on me. And I found favour in his eyes – but barely.
Sorry. I don’t give a damn what Gundara or the HRC says. Getting his approval is not a success. I won't legitimize his arrogant "authority" by saying "thank you, master". I'll say: "who the hell are you? Besides a busy-body bureaucrat?"
Look at his rationale for acquitting me: because the Western Standard met Gundara’s home-made tests of reasonableness. We published the cartoons in “context”; we published letters that “criticized” them; and my favourite, the cartoons weren’t “simply stuck in the middle” of the magazine. Gundara must have thought for ten whole minutes to come up with that list of journalistic do’s and don’t’s. And – phew! – he likes me. He really likes me!
Sorry again, I don’t give a damn if he likes me. In fact, it rather creeps me out that a whole squad of teat-sucking bureaucrats spent 900 days inspecting me and the Western Standard. I positively want to offend them. In fact, that’s pretty much the only test of my freedom: can I do exactly what Gundara says I shouldn’t? I’m not interested in publishing recipes or sports scores. I’m interested in bothering the hell out of government.
Did we ever mention how much we love this guy?
Levant later references the Rev. Stephen Boissoin who was “sentenced” never to speak about homosexuality again and wonders why it is he got off the hook but Boissoin did not. Levant suggests that he was just too big of a pain-in-the-ass and his star turns in his YouTube videos of the AHRC “hearings” made the AHRC look petty, subjective yet intellectually feeble all at once… all adding up to one huge PR nightmare for them. We would tend to agree but if they decided to cut bait, what took them so long? Oh yeah… we did say intellectually feeble, did we not?
We’ll try to dig up the dirt on Boissoin because his treatment at the hands of the AHRC was perhaps even more egregious than that of Levant’s.
If you don't like the weather in Denver currently, wait 15 minutes. Pt.II

While Obama’s Christmas… err, Holiday ad reminded us that “we all have a stake in each other” the man evidently neglected to drive one through the heart of the woman pictured.
Coy is how Hillary is playing this one… and both sides against the middle.
In a recent chat with supporters she reiterated her claim for a unified Party behind Obama but in a bid to salve the wounds of her supporters she allowed that, yeah… you know, I may allow my name to appear on the ballot at the convention and uhhh… I’m not telling you to vote for me but I’m not telling you to not vote for me either because there’s just no way (chuckle) that I’ll win.
And this from her blog regarding exactly what her (and Bill’s?) role will be regarding the campaign and possibly after the campaign: ““While no decisions have been made yet, I will make sure that we keep you up to date and involved with all of the Convention activity,”
Clinton remains hugely popular among Democrats as her 70 to 66 favorability rating over Obama would suggest so this subtle positioning weeks before the convention when McCain has closed the gap on Obama and, equally as significant, the Messianic shine has worn-off that coin, has caused quite a bit of musing around the BwD headquarters today.
She wouldn’t dare…. Would she…? No….
… chaos?

We Trust May 30th was just an epically slow day around the County offices. (UPDATED)

We have forgotten the exact details of the story but years ago, a magazine alleged an affair between Ann Coulter and some high profile journo-political type whose name escapes us at the moment. Coulter’s response to this allegation was: “I look forward to owning (name of magazine) in the very near future.” Said magazine recanted allegation and issued profuse apologies and Coulter dropped her defamation(?) charges (she has dated both Bill Maher and Bob Gucionne Jr., so we can’t imagine who it was she was linked to that caused her to react in such a manner. Bill Maher….? That’s just, ick…..)
Anyway, we would hope that 50 or so members of the Guatay Christian Fellowship take a rather large chunk out of the County of San Diego after what they are currently enduring.
The members of the Church were given a cease and desist order by County officials because the building in which they hold services is zoned for selling beer and wine but not for holding religious services. This is not a typo – this is actually happening.
The previous owner of the building wanted to make a go of a country and western bar but when that fell through, Stan Patterson, the pastor and his flock moved in…. 22 years ago.
Deputy County Counsel Eliot Alazraki told Peterson in a May 30 letter that the county would take legal action against him if the members of the nondenominational church in the community of Guatay continued worshipping at the trailer park.
“We do not pass judgment on whether the use you are making of the building is a better use than the approved one,” Alazraki wrote. “We are only called upon to decide whether the use is legal or illegal.”
The idiot, Alazraki, is actually correct in this self-assessment as any “judgement” on his part was exercised very sparingly.
It gets better….
Charles LePla, an attorney for trailer park owner John O'Flynn, said new permits for the church would cost at least $10,000, plus thousands more for environmental studies.
Words escape us.
Thankfully, the good people of GCF aren’t taking this lying down and are suing the County for violating their rights to assemble and worship.
We don’t know what torques us off more: the jock-twisting of our American sensibilities toward the 1st Amendment, the complete absence of any common sense being applied by these lackey bureaucrats at the County offices or the fact that our tax dollars will be used to defend the County’s position which will get absolutely vaporized under a mushroom cloud in a court of law?
Actually, drop that last one. We’ll pay to see that.
… and to think that this whole thing could have been avoided if the Church were serving-up the real deal at communion instead of grape juice.
P.S. We have half a mind (no small feat, that) to roll on out there Sunday morning, Bible in hand, Welch's in the cooler and tailgate in solidarity with our east county neighbors. Who's in?
UPDATE #1: Our sources tell us that Guatay Christian Fellowship will be exercising their 1st amendment right to worship in defiance of pointy-headed bureaucracy this Sunday at 1000. Check their site here for directions.
