Unbelievable.... or maybe not considering the cast of characters...or character. We just got done watching the Monday Night New England/Baltimore game, a game in which the Pats’ bid for an undefeated season was on the line. Baltimore was up 24-17 in the 4th quarter for two very specific reasons: they were running the ball down the aging Pats’ throats and they were putting pressure on the Pats’ quarterback, Tom Brady.
But in what looked like the surest thing since Hitler in Poland in '39, the guy pictured at the left decided instead to insert his considerable intellect, talent and superior mental acuity into the proceedings thus crushing any chance his team had at taking down the Patriots, losing 27-24.
You see, a “genius” like Billick just can’t help himself. Why leave well enough alone with a devastatingly effective running game when you can further exert your considerable play-calling abilities by, you know, mixing things up a bit by going downfield into double-coverage because…. damn, you’re a genius, Brian and the Patriots will never be expecting you to put the game in the hands of your shaky-as-all-get-out QB, Kyle Boller?
And about that pressure you were bringing at Tom Brady for 3-1/2 quarters….? Overrated. In fact, Brady and his ability to pick apart defenses if you let him with a 3-man rush… hell, that’s overrated, too. They were never expecting it, man. Good call, that.
Oh, what’s that? You just ran out of time? Even after giving up 10 unanswered in the 4th, you had everything under control and just needed a couple more minutes to right the ship. Oh well, pal… no one said being a genius was easy. Got 4-8?
(hey… if anyone sees Willis McGahee, give the Ravens a call. No one’s seen him since the end of the 3rd quarter tonight. Thanks.)

Should I say it, gotta say it, there's only three things that can happen when you throw the ball....and two of them are bad.
By the way, my TV is working just fine, but I think that if I take it apart and fiddle with a couple things, maybe it will work better. What could go wrong? I think I'm qualified to be a head football Coach!!
Honestly, outside of politicians, is there any profession that engenders hubris more than head football coaches?
Dean,
And what about Billick's brilliant timing in calling a time out when his defense is ready to crush a fourth and short by New England. The time out was called to late for the players to know that the play would not count. The Ravens defense stuffed it. But then they learned that "his brilliance" had robbed them of the game winning stop with the late time out call. Their physical agony and quite literal flopping on the ground was painful to behold
