Good thing we left the meds at home

We caught a glimpse of it out of the corner of our eye from about a mile away just outside of Borrego Springs proper but knew better than to think there were actually woolly Mammoths out in the desert. We promptly forgot about it and went about our business but several hours later on the drive back, we took a slightly different route and found out our eyes did not deceive us.

Multimillionaire, Dennis Avery has commissioned artist Ricardo Breceda to work on a new sculpture every few weeks to be brought down from his studio in Perris and to erect that sculpture on the undeveloped 3 square miles that Avery owns around town.
As of December of last year, there were 39 sculptures of mammoths, saber-tooth tigers, sloths, turtles and other wild life that roamed the area millions of years ago.

There are no signs or markings indicating where or what these sculptures are and we think that is kind of cool. The “stumbled-upon” factor is up there with our discovery of the Mojave phone booth south of Baker on the Kel-Baker road in the Eastern Mojave Preserve back in the mid 90s.

Get out there and check out these wonderful creations before they pave paradise… or something.

Accompanying article from U-T here, which helped us actually look like we knew what we were talking about in this post.
