It's a shame that the weather probably won't cooperate

Mongo called us the other day to clue us into the San Diego Padres’ bravado-less sales pitch to prospective ticket buyers: “The San Diego Padres – they’re better than you think.” Long-time Pads broadcaster and WWII and Korean War vet, Jerry Coleman, who was put up to this deserves better but it did get us to thinking about something.

After we read about the Padres hopes to rebound from their miserable 99-loss ’08 campaign by having their two top starters, Jake Peavy and Chris Young combine for 70 starts, it reminded us of a saying “Pops” shared with us and which reflected the strategy of the Boston Braves of the late 40s: “Spahn and Sain and then pray for rain”

Dean,
Hey they're lowering the price of beer at Petco. Can't be all bad.
