Nothing to see here, please move along

We caught our first glimpse of the ’10 Chevy Camaro last week as it was doing a slow roll down 28th Street before making a left onto Harbor Drive. We are not exaggerating when we say this car was stopping people walking up 28th in the opposite direction, dead in their tracks.

After seeing similarly designed Challengers and Chargers from Dodge all over the highways, the Camaro is intended to be the pay-off pitch after 3 years of highly anticipated buzz.

A few days later we ran across a story about a WaPo automotive blogger that was getting the run-around if not blown-off completely from 4 D.C.-area Chevy dealerships when he inquired about test driving the new Camaro.

Now, we won’t assume to know exactly what that was all about but wrap your brain around this delicious irony: That the two government-owned and operated domestic auto manufacturers that we have been told would be transformed by green, light-weight death traps would rise again like a Phoenix from the ashes… on the strength of 6 and 8 cylinder classic American muscle cars.

It’s a beautiful thing and it has us seriously re-thinking our reactionary stance on being a Bailout Nation luddite… at least with respect to the domestic auto industry.

P.S. Head on over to B-Daddy's place for another aspect of the government-run auto industry that is not working out quite as intended.

Thanks for the link and dang, that is a fine looking piece of machinery. I could almost forgive Chrysler and GM if these vehicles turn out be quality products. THAT is how you apologize to America! Build a product that we will love. Believe me, these guys owe the American public an apology, for being so lame that the government saw fit to bail them out of bankruptcy.

I know nothing about cars. That said...

Those are pretty cars. the black one screams "spy movie" to me. (Elf is wondering why they made the new Camaro look like the new Firebirds. I didn't know there WAS a new firebird....)

I have one of the 2008 Mustangs, so beautifully retro-ed to the classic 60's version. Recently I noticed the new 09 Mustang. A horrible set of changes that make it look like the 70's versions. Hideous.

Understand I had always wanted a Mustang. I fell in love with the Boss version. When the retro version came out I had a serious case of "WANT!". But, had I not bought one of the 08's, I would not have bought the 09 - I'd buy the Camaro in the post here.

Anybody up for a little Prius talk?

O@H, a lady friend of mine was expressing the same exact sentiments re: the 08 and 09 'stangs.

Noting the typical bad behavior of hybrid drivers, I have taking to referring to those vehicles as priapisms.

A second thought came to mind late last night.

If GM turns around, based at least some on the new 09 models, the administration will claim success. But the 09 models have been determined for about two years (it takes roughly that long to design, manufacture a few, and test them for safety, fuel economy, etc). In other words until sometime like the 2011 models, the government will have essentially no impact on GM models. It will be particularly interesting to see what happens then.
