Even Barack Obama, who opposed the Iraq troop surge, has finally acknowledged its success. But some of his fellow Democrats in Congress apparently remain unconvinced. Earlier this week, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Armed Services Chairman Carl Levin teamed up to block a vote on a bipartisan resolution "recognizing the strategic success of the troop surge in Iraq" and thanking our men and women in uniform for their efforts.
Article from WSJ here.
Yep, the Harry and Nancy show is back and with it… more madcap and wacky shenanigans that only they can provide.
Cool thing about these blogs is that you can go back and see what’s been written about these same subjects. Hey, what’s this….
But make no mistake about what they are really thinking. They were betrayed by House Whip, James Clyburn, who in a fit of candor admitted that a successful surge would be “a real problem for us”. One can assume that “us” meant anti-war Democrats, most elected Democrats and certainly Democratic Presidential candidates who are now faced with the reality of finding a new tact in which to criticize the war effort and the Administration’s conduct of the same.
Golly, that'd be us in all our full, proud and profane glory, here.
Just keep this in your back pocket if you're struggling a bit this coming November.

I suppose I could get behind a "yes" vote if we could add a couple of ammendments:
1) An acknowledgment that the surge's success -- arguably due to payments made to the guys leaving roadside bombs in the first place -- is a limited success. i.e., bombs are still going off and taking human lives at a daily rate
2) We're happy to acknowledge the surge's qualified success, as long as we also acknowledge that we never should have been in Iraq in the first place. i.e., Sorry. Our bad. Hope this all makes up for it.

Hmmm… let’s see what else has been “resolved” in lieu of honoring the troops.
S. Res. 529. A resolution commemorating the 110th
anniversary of the founding of the Greater Philadelphia
Association of Realtors; to the Committee on the Judiciary.
S. Con. Res. 87. A concurrent resolution congratulating the
Republic of Latvia on the 90th anniversary of its declaration
of independence; to the Committee on Foreign Relations.
(cosponsored by that walking jerk-off himself, Dick Durbin)
hey, how about this one?
By Mr. BIDEN (for himself and Mr. Grassley):
S. Res. 614. A resolution designating the month of August
2008 as ``National Medicine Abuse Awareness Month''; to the
Committee on the Judiciary
This is some important stuff, no?
And this…
By Mr. BAYH (for himself, Mr. Thune, and Mr. Smith):
S. Res. 580. A resolution expressing the sense of the
Senate on preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapons
capability; to the Committee on Foreign Relations.
Whoa! “… expressing the sense of the Senate…?” Why, I never…
Dudes, don’t strain yourself or anything.
And I’m not quite sure the Senate would be able to soldier-on doing (the business of the) people without the good ol'
S. Con. Res. 93. A concurrent resolution supporting the
goals and ideals of ``National Sudden Cardiac Arrest
Awareness Month''; to the Committee on Health, Education,
Labor, and Pensions.
All this and more and not a simple tip of the cap to the troops. Pathetic.
My understanding is that we've been tipping our cap to the troops since the inception of the Iraq war began.
Their civilian leadership, on the other hand...
My sense is that the troops would, much more than a congressional thank you note, like to get what they need in terms of equipment, troop strength, leadership, and policy to complete each task, and -- oh yeah -- the right country to fight in in the first place.
Long-term care and increased education benefits, etc, may also rank a little higher on their Wish List than a GOP-Sponsored, "Ooh Baby, You're The GREATEST!" Hallmark Moment.
BTW, it's become "Very GOP" to sneak something controversial which has difficulty standing on it's own merits and then wrap it in the American Flag or the troops so that it more easily slides through. The buzz phrase then becomes something like "If you don't support H.R. 666 supporting the designated hitter, then you don't support the troops or America". Well, gee, I don't want not show support for the troops. Cancel my Cubs tickets and show me to New Comiskey!!

Hell, Mongo, given that this "resolution" wasn't used as an opportunity to be slandered by the likes of Murtha, Durbin, Kennedy, Kerry has got to feel like some sort of real (not moral) victory by the troops.
"Yay, we weren't back-doored"
