Global Warming, Ethanol and The Price of Beer

Got your attention? OK, all you neocons, er, conservatives or libertarians or whatever we are. Now we have a crisis. The price of malt and hops are rising dramatically, affecting the price of beer. Who's to blame? You guessed it. Global warming is causing climactic changes that are ruining the barley crop world wide. Barley is used to make the malt used in most beers. Global warming is simultaneously causing heavy rains in Europe AND a drought in Australia. Who knew? Furthermore, growing corn has become more lucrative due to ethanol subsidies, crowding out the growing of barley. Darn those Iowans, they can't even field a decent football team, but they've got the whole country growing corn, even in Washington state. So now it's serious, the price of beer is under assault. Time to rethink this whole global warming thing; and let's deprive Iowa of statehood while we're at it.

B-Daddy, not to further the angst but subsidized ethanol is now encroaching the tequila market.

Yes, rows and rows of glorious and wonderful blue agave cacti in the Jalisco district are being plowed under for corn.

Raising the price of beer and tequila while creating a food pinch on those least able to afford it... global warming: the gift that keeps on giving.

I dunno, B-Daddy, my 24 oz. can of Miller High Life still costs just $1.39 at Kiels. This sounds like more of the same, empty eco-scaremongering. I never thought you'd start it, too.

Tsk tsk tsk.

See, if you pull the right heart-strings, what happens? You've got me re thinking my position.

As we speed toward winter here on the East Coast... am I the only one who (gulp!) WELCOMES global warming? It's getting cold outside! And Earth people will adapt, especially given our million year advance warning that the temp will rise 1 degree and Bangladesh will flood (again). Global warming? I say "bring it on!"
