Foxfier has an outstanding post on a Memorial Day tradition of which we were totally unaware. As if it needs to be said, please take some time out today to remember those who have made this radical experiment in democracy possible. And though the phrase wasn't invented for this occaison, we still think that all of us here are merely "standing on the shoulders of giants."

I'd like to add that every galley I've been in, shore-side, has a single-spot missing man table.
The one in Sasebo was beautiful--I wouldn't put it past the Japanese guys who run that place to replace the lemon slice every meal.

In looking to the future we can see a better place
where we can shake the yoke of tyranny for all,
it's been paved by generations who have gone now to their rest
it's just remembrance of their dignity we ask.
